How to view header infomation in a Lotus Notes Client

The normal way to view the header information on a Notes client is to open the mail and right click on the mail. Then select properties -> and go to the second tab (fields tab) and view each filed one by one. If you are used to it this is okay, but if you are used to analysing header information presented by other email clients, this could be quite frustrating.

So to view the full header information on the notes client you need to view the document in the source code format.

To do this

  • Open the mail document
  • go to View -> Show -> Page Source

This will open a new tab with the full header information just like any other email client.

How to synchronize personal address book with web access in Domino 8

In Domino 7.x, you need to periodically synchronise the Web Access Address book with the personal address book using a menu item. If you have the Domino 8.x client installed, the first problem you see is this option is not available. This is because this synchronization is now automated.

In the replication tab of the Notes Client a new entry is now available. Its marked as "Synchronize Contacts". But this is disabled and cannot be run in this state. So the first thing to do is to get this enabled.

To enable this entry you need to go to Preferences in File Menu item in the Lotus Client. Select
Contacts from the left hand Column and make sure the "Enable Synchronization Contacts on Replicator" is enabled.

This will enable the replicator entry and now you can run this to start the immediate replication and schedule this agent to run periodically.

Domino 8 Web Access synchronization troubleshooting tips

Few issues we faced when upgrading Domino mail server to Version 8 and solutions are below.

Scenario : Primary mail servers are in a secured environment. A separate server is maintained for web mail access. This server replicates the mail boxes from primary servers.

Issue 1. New mail read marks are not replicated.
Solution : Need to manually enable the replication of the unread marks in database properties

Open the mail box in Lotus Client and go to File -> Application -> Properties and select the last tab.

The default setting for "Replicate unread marks" is "Never". Change this is to "Clustered Servers Only" or "All Servers" depending on your environment. Once these settings are replicated to the Webmail Server, the unread marks will be properly replicated.

How to install Blackberry drivers on a PC to recharge the device

All Blackberry users would have realised that Blackberry does not have a downloadable device driver for their phones. Only way to install the drivers are to install the Blackberry Desktop Manager on the PC.

So what do you do if you want to charge your phone from a PC without the bulky software ? This happened to a friend of mine. He had a new laptop , and went overseas and forgot to take the charger. So what do u do? Download and install the BB desktop just to charge your phone ?

I searched for a driver download everywhere but couldn't find it. But these drivers are available on a folder inside BB desktop installation PC. On Windows XP it was found at "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers".

This folder will contain the following files

  1. BbDevMgr.exe
  2. BbDevMgrPs.dll
  3. RimUsb.sys
  4. rimusbnt.cat
  5. RimUsbNT.inf

So what you need to do is locate this folder on a machine which have BB Desktop installed and keep this safe in your thumb drive or zip it and post it to your web mail account. The whole folder size is just 318 KB.

When you need to install only the drivers just to charge ur phone, just copy this folder to the PC ( if on a webmail account) and just plug in the phone to the PC. When the windows OS searches for the drivers, point it to the driver folder and it will install the drivers and start charging your phone.

Having problems installing the Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.3 or Lotus Notes on Vista?

Installing anything on Vista is a pain. I tried installing the BB manager on a Vista Business Laptop. Installation went through but with some errors. Following files failed to register GW.dll, GWApi.dll, desktopSetup_pb.dll, SyncAE_pb.dll. And without these files the BB Desktop Manager refused to start. Installing in Administrator login also gave the same problem. This turns out to be a incorrect ACLs on some registry hives. To correct this problem see the instructions on http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspx Download and install this small app and follow the instructions. Once the script was run the software installed without any errors.

Incidentally this corrected some problems I had running Lotus Notes 8.0 client too. All I had to do was to run a fresh installation on the existing installation which repaired few registry access issues and now its working fine too.
